We recap the police raid, arrest, and subsequent sentencing of Richard and Mildred Loving. The Lovings plead guilty to “cohabiting as man and wife, against the peace and dignity of the Commonwealth,” for violating Virginia’s Racial Integrity Act by being in an interracial marriage. They were sentenced to 1 year in prison, or to be banned from the state of Virginia for 25 years. They chose to leave the state and moved to Washington DC. The Lovings attempted to vacate the sentence which proved unsuccessful. With the help of ACLU lawyers the Lovings were able to get their case in front of the United States Supreme Court, which ruled in their favor. This ruling…
