A cynical 80s update of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol with Bill Murray in the central role, Scrooged has all the elements of a festive home run. Yet back in 1988 critics received the movie like a lump of festive coal, and even Murray himself was publicly critical of his performance. Nevertheless, years of TV syndication have helped Scrooged to endure as a cult holiday classic. Did the critics get it wrong, or has Murray’s boundless charisma hoodwinked contemporary viewers into looking back at the film with rose tinted glasses?
